LASIK Consultations

Exploring Life With Less Dependence on Glasses or Contacts

For many people who wear glasses or contact lenses, LASIK and other refractive surgery options offer a way to reduce that dependence. Before any procedure, though, a thorough consultation is essential — not everyone is a good candidate, and understanding your options is the first step toward making the right decision for your eyes.

What Is a LASIK Consultation?

A LASIK consultation is a comprehensive evaluation to determine whether you're a good candidate for refractive surgery and, if so, which approach may be right for you.

What the Consultation Includes

  • Detailed Vision History: Reviewing your prescription history, any changes over time, and your visual goals.
  • Corneal Evaluation: Assessing the shape, thickness, and health of the cornea, since this affects both candidacy and surgical planning.
  • Dry Eye Assessment: Checking tear film health, since dry eye can affect both candidacy and recovery.
  • Overall Eye Health Exam: Making sure there are no other conditions that would affect the safety or outcome of surgery.
  • Discussion of Options: Reviewing what refractive surgery can and can't address, and answering your questions.

Who May Be a Candidate

Good candidates for refractive surgery generally have a stable eyeglass prescription, healthy corneas, and no underlying eye conditions that would complicate healing. Not everyone is a candidate — some people are better served by glasses, contact lenses, or other vision correction options — and that determination is exactly what the consultation is for.

What Happens During Your Visit

Your consultation will begin with a conversation about your vision history and what you're hoping to achieve. From there, your provider will perform a series of measurements and tests to evaluate your corneas and overall eye health. These findings help determine whether refractive surgery is a safe and appropriate option for you.

If you are a candidate, your provider will walk you through what the surgical process typically involves, what recovery looks like, and what to expect in terms of follow-up care. If you're not currently a candidate, they'll explain why and discuss alternative options for managing your vision.

Co-Management With Your Surgeon

At Ace Medical Care, our optometry team handles the pre-operative evaluation and works alongside ophthalmology for surgical planning and post-operative care, so you have consistent support before, during, and after your procedure — including follow-up visits to monitor healing and visual outcomes.

Questions to Bring to Your Consultation

  • How long has your prescription been stable?
  • Do you have any history of dry eye or other eye conditions?
  • What are your visual goals — reducing glasses dependence for distance, reading, or both?
  • What questions do you have about recovery time and follow-up care?
